Target-less boresight calibration now available in OxTS Georeferencer 2.8!

Company News July 7, 2024

OxTS Georeferencer provides mapping professionals with an effective yet straightforward method of georeferencing LiDAR data.

The software includes an optional boresight calibration tool that aligns the coordinate frames between a GNSS/INS and LiDAR to remove blurring and double-vision – improving the clarity of results.

Released today, OxTS Georeferencer 2.8 sees the introduction of a new target-less boresight calibration method giving users more flexibility when deciding how to calibrate the angle offsets between their LiDAR and GNSS/INS.

Existing customers using OxTS Georeferencer can download version 2.8 from the support site here.

New boresight calibration options!

With OxTS Georeferencer 2.8 users now have the ability to choose how they boresight their GNSS/INS and LiDAR payload.

The traditional target-based method, requires a user to survey two dedicated, physical boresight ‘targets’ at varying speeds and angles. The collected data is then used to calculate the angle offsets between your GNSS/INS and LiDAR.

The new target-less method, available in OxTS Georeferencer 2.8, removes the need for physical hardware targets, and so to the space required to survey them.

Both methods remove blurring and double-vision from point clouds and improves overall accuracy.

How does target-less boresight calibration work?

The new target-less method works simply by using the surrounding infrastructure to act as boresight targets. The process is very straightforward:

  1. Choose a flat planar surface. This can be a wall, road sign or even the ground.
  2. Drive or fly your LiDAR payload over, or near to, the surface at varying speeds and if possible, angles.
  3. Open OxTS Georeferencer.
  4. Upload NCOM and PCAP files created by your GNSS/INS and LiDAR sensor.
  5. Click ‘run boresight calibration’.

OxTS Georeferencer will then accurately calculate the angle offsets using the data you’ve collected.

What else is included in OxTS Georeferencer 2.8?

+ New custom LiDAR decoders – If you want to use OxTS Georeferencer but your LiDAR isn’t listed as a supported sensor, don’t despair! A new custom LiDAR decoder format, now included in OxTS Georeferencer 2.8, allows you to integrate your sensor without having to wait for a new release!

This added flexibility means the GNSS/INS and LiDAR combinations you can use with OxTS Georeferencer really are almost endless!

+ Ouster custom packet format – OxTS Georeferencer 2.8 will now also include a new Ouster LiDAR custom packet format making it easier than ever before to integrate newer Ouster devices into OxTS Georeferencer.

+ Usability improvements – As well as making it easier to integrate new LiDAR sensors into OxTS Georeferencer, version 2.8 includes some important usability improvements, these include:

  • Output information regarding waypoints has been filtered out.
  • Reduced NCOM load time.
  • Improved memory allocation for Boresighting – higher channel LiDARs are now easier to boresight.

Remember, you don’t have to use an OxTS GNSS/INS to take advantage of the boresight calibration and georeferencing tools in OxTS Georeferencer. Using the anyNAV feature you can use your existing navigation device alongside your LiDAR sensor.
